Hops, garlic and the first day of the summer school holidays
Not blogged for ages...still got the hops, this year supported by hazel Poles. Harvested garlic a couple of days ago so drying them atm.....house stinks of garlic.

Hops nearly ready for harvest. Cones will be picked off the plant so as to keep it growing andtherefore help establish roots. Levitation would be a useful skill, or stilts.

Homegrown hops
First shoots of newly planted hops back in April 2013 |
My 2nd attempt at growing hops; this time I purchased 4 roots of Fuggle hops on the internet (http://www.aplus-hops.co.uk/default.asp) which arrived within the week. Our front garden faces South so the hops were planted there to get the maximum sun. Then just as the first shoots emerged the council decided to re-render the house and the scaffold went up so I moved the delicate plants to a safer part of the garden. It was during this move that the most promising plant suffered damage which it never recovered from....no more shoots from that one this year. The other plants have grown fast and strong although they all receive varying amounts of sun.
